Children and Mental Health Project
This project is aimed at assisting family and community workers supporting children 0-18 years old. Using a strengths based approach, training will provide opportunity for increased awareness and understanding of how to identify Mental Illness and respond appropriately. Specialists from across Australia will be engaged to deliver training looking at a variety of the complex issues involved when working with children and mental health – including: anxiety, depression, aspergers; autism spectrum disorder; attention deficit disorder; substance use disorders; psychotic disorders; crises situations and interventions (such as suicidal thoughts/behaviors and self-harm); and working with children of parents with mental illness.
The National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing found that “younger people were more likely to have a mental disorder than older people”. 26% of people aged 16-24 had a disorder compared to 6% of people aged 75-85. 34% of people living in one parent families had a mental disorder. Research has shown that early identification and intervention leads to better outcomes for people living with mental illness, and can prevent suicide and self-harm.
Through research and consultation with workers in the sector, we are continuing to develop and deliver a variety of training events. All events also provide workers with the opportunity to meet and share experiences and establish contacts with other workers, aiding in building a collaborative approach in supporting children living with mental illness.
LGA's covered: Auburn, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Holroyd, Parramatta, Penrith.
